There are so many opinions on issues in social media but without a context it can be difficult for organisations to make sense of them. WikiCurve enables each issue to be mapped, by experts or any member of the community, to produce a timeline of public acceptance of the issue. The map turns events into a pattern of steps to mark the evolution of an issue. The developers of the WikiCurve, consultancy Futureye, identified a 6-step sequence for how an issue builds from a radical concept that challenges the status quo to a part of the status quo. By the time the issue progresses to the status quo it has reached social maturation where the idea is a “norm” or enjoying mainstream acceptance and those who hold a view counter to it are sanctioned through poor reputation, regulatory or political action. Organisations need to know where mainstream opinions and attitudes are in the sequence to determine if their approach is appropriate.
